Lateness/Truancy Policy (2009)

Lateness Policy

In order to maximize instructional time and limit disruption to the learning of others, students are expected to arrive in their classes prior to the late bell.

Consequences

A) If a student accumulates 3 lates for a course/homeroom period then the subject teacher/homeroom teacher will assign a detention. This is put in the student’s Conduct file in Winschool

B) If the student skips the detention, then a phone call goes home (via detention committee), that the student has missed a detention and a notice is given that if the student does not serve his/her detention the next day, an in-school suspension will be assigned for the following day.

C) For the next late, a detention is assigned by the teacher and the same procedure is followed. If the student skips the detention, then a phone call goes home via Synrevoice and an at home suspension is assigned for the next day.

D) Each time a student is late thereafter, a detention is assigned and the same procedure follows.

E) Following the second and subsequent suspensions, a parent/guardian must come in to the school for a meeting to discuss the problem. Students who are frequently late may lose participation privileges in school extracurricular activities.

Note:

If a student has a valid reason for being late, then a note/email should be provided by the next morning to the teacher and the detention assigned will be deleted from the conduct file.

Truancy Policy

Students are expected to attend all classes unless the absence has been authorized by a parent or a member of the administration of the school. Not only is attendance required by The School’s Act, it is essential for the successful completion of courses. The most common cause of academic failure is absence.

Since we sincerely want students to be successful at Holy Trinity High School, we will respond to every unexcused absence from class. All absences must be cleared (excused) no later than morning homeroom on the second day following the absence.
Failure to do so will result in the implementation of the following.

Consequences:

A) If a student skips a class during the morning, the homeroom teacher will assign a detention at lunchtime for the next day. If a student skips a class during the afternoon, the homeroom teacher will assign a detention the next morning to be served the next day.

*Skipped detentions will be treated as per guidelines in Lateness Policy.

B) If a student has an unexcused absence for a day/half day (i.e. no note/email is provided upon return to school), then the homeroom teacher will assign a detention for the next day. If a note/email is provided by the next morning for the absence then the detention will be deleted.

*Skipped detentions will be treated as per guidelines in Lateness Policy.
